HUCC History

In 1962, a small group of Congregationalists gathered to form a Congregational Church in northwest Baltimore. The original group was comprised of the 10 founders: Marian Alston, Vallen and Anne Emery, Howard and Lillian Green, Fannette Hughes, Edith Sparrow, Wayland and Lettie Wilson, and John Wood. The first organizational meeting was at the Fellowship House. The first formal worship service was held at St. Luke's Evangelical and Reformed Church on January 13, 1963.

Due to the merger between the Congregational Christian Churches and the Evangelical and Reformed Church, we changed our name from Northwest Congregational Church to our present name, Heritage United Church of Christ. The United Church of Christ was a new denomination formed as a result of the merger between the denominations mentioned above. The church was founded as a place where all people may find a spiritual home and take a responsibility in church government and program development according to their several talents and abilities. The church was officially chartered in March 1965.

Heritage preaches and teaches a strong social gospel. The church's life has been closely entwined with the ebb and flow of life in the larger community. Over the years, Heritage has consistently responded to urgings of the Holy Spirit to be socially active, politically involved, and community engaged.

The blessings from God have allowed our church to come a long way from Fellowship House, to Mondawmin Mall, to the current stately building at 3106 Liberty Heights Avenue, in Baltimore.
